Why did you start practicing Yoga?

I got back into running about 2 years ago. I ran a ½ marathon and I was getting a different injury every 3 or 4 months and that’s why I started coming to yoga. I felt I needed to do something if I wanted to keep running and I heard Yoga would help. So I tried a couple of studios and what I really like about Ahhh Sweet Balance is that you have a good selection of classes. You have a little bit of everything and I’m more of a slow paced stretching type of person, so I really love it here. I really love the staff too. You guys are awesome!

What changes have you been experiencing in your body since starting to practice with us?

Well, I haven’t had any of the reoccurring injuries since. I’ve had so much success with the stretching. I’ve learned a lot of different stretches.  It’s helped me to continue running. I think if I don’t do anything like this I’m just going to have injury after injury. I’ve had a nagging one for a while that yoga has helped me with tremendously. I was told that I might not be able to run for a long long time but I’m back running now! So it’s helped me a lot. 

Also, my back has never felt better! I have 2 bulging discs and now I have flexibility in my spine that I never thought I’d have. It’s been great. I’d come every day if I could but work is such an inconvenience! 

The other benefit of coming here that I totally didn’t expect was being able to relax. That’s been a huge benefit. There’s some classes that I go into a state where I almost fall asleep during the stretches. It’s really fantastic. I wasn’t expecting that. I was just coming to stretch and prevent injuries but it’s opened up a whole other area of my life.

But isn’t yoga just for woman?

I believed in that stereotype that yoga was just for woman. I was reluctant to come. I just had some misconceptions in what yoga was all about. Once I started coming here, you all have made me feel comfortable. I feel like I have 2 left feet. So, I was thinking how am I going to do this without embarrassing myself but it’s been great. It’s been really good.

What would you say to men that have the perception that yoga is only for woman?

Absolutely try it! Try all different classes. I believe as we age if we don’t do stuff like this then we’re going to have problems. Major physical problems. For me, it’s a necessity. If I want to continue to run races then I need to come here and get on my mat to stretch at least 1 time per week. I would especially highly recommend people with back pain that don’t know how to stretch to come here. 

Has anyone in your life noticed a difference in you since you started practicing yoga?

Oh, ya! My wife has noticed a difference. She has mentioned that it has had a calming effect on me. Especially during times of difficulty that we all go through in ordinary life. It’s helping me handle it a lot better. 

What’s been your biggest transformation?

I think the biggest change is having the ability to connect with myself and feeling what’s going on in my body. To just slow down and being able to have a different perspective on life. The messages and words in class have helped me become more focused on looking for healthy alternatives in my life.
