What brought you to Ahhh Sweet Balance?

Well, my friend, Kathy invited me to join her for a class. I had never been to a studio. I’ve done it at home. I’d do the Rodney Yee DVDs. I really had no idea what to expect. Was it going to be hot yoga?  Power yoga? Were there going to be skinny type ballerina people running around but it was so not that. It wasn't pretentious. It felt so warm and welcoming. I took one class, and I’ve been hooked!

How does ASB make you feel?

Reenergized. It’s like a reset and a whole new beginning. You could have the crappiest day and then knowing that you have yoga at the end of the day, it just washes everything away. One of my coworkers said that she likes to go home and drink after work and asked how could I go do yoga? And It’s because it just feels so amazing! You sleep better so much better, and when you’re here, in your comfort zone, all of the problems don't seem like they even exist anymore.

I just went through my certification exam (RN Certified Case Manager) and I was starting to wig, like how am I going to do this and when I thought of my yoga and breathing, everything was fine. 

What is your favorite class?

All of them. I like the new Balanced Body. I like that it's an overall class. Yoga, Pilates, Strength, and relaxation.  I like the how the Strong Slow Flow yoga challenges you. I never had upper body strength. I could never hold a plank, and now down dogs are a resting position for me. So that’s a huge improvement. 

Gentle Yin Yoga Stretch was the first class I came to, and after I had hurt my back over Thanksgiving, that was the first class I came back to. It’s a great balance to have that if you’re feeling sore or maybe you’re not really into the down dogs & chaturangas. 

Each class is equally important in some way because they all offer so much. 

What's 1 of your favorite yoga poses?

Tree - It’s empowering. Even when I fall I know I can get back up. There’s roots there.

How would you describe ASB to someone who has never been here?

Without sounding hoaky, it’s warm. It feels like a second home to me. I was sad over the holidays thinking “oh no what am I going to do, there’s no yoga classes!”

It's not the same practicing at home. There’s definitely a community and support here. I think all of you guys and even the classmates support you to try a little harder. Then there’s also the days you come in and sometimes just being here is good enough. It’s more about feeling accepted here. 

Have you experienced a transformation here at ASB?

Yes. Self-love, acceptance, and patience. Family history wise, there was lots of drama and turmoil over the years, and it had created a lot of self doubt. After a few months of coming here, it was like a corner that got turned and I saw that this was really beneficial for me. 

Ahhh Sweet Balance is a part of me now. It’s part of my routine. I have a business conference next week so I’m going to miss a few classes and it causes pangs of discomfort for me when I can’t come. I try to come at least 4-5 classes per week, and I'm only going to be able to come to 2 or 3. 

How has yoga changed who you are off the mat?

I have so much more self-confidence. I can laugh at myself more. I always say, I don’t know if this is the yoga or getting older or maybe both but I don’t come unglued now and get caught up in the nonsense. No problem is unsolvable. 

Yoga is something so much more. I really try to do cardio and pedal. I have an elliptical at home, but yoga is really the whole package.  Not skinny but I’m thinking about eating healthier, thinking more about getting my rest and seeing it as an investment in my self-care. Like letting myself go to bed when I’m tired and that it’s ok to do that. 

Overall, l I’m happier and healthier.
